For those PwPs who have either undergone Deep Brain Stimulation surgery or are thinking about having it done.
Once medications are no longer effective in controlling PD symptoms, many PwPs will turn to DBS for relief of tremors, dyskinesia, and cramping muscles. For most, DBS has drastically reduced or even eliminated some symptoms, at least temporarily and has given them back a number of years lost to Parkinson’s disease. This improvement gives the DBS support group a very different dynamic than the others and it is important to talk about it with others. They discuss their experiences from a different perspective. Instead of speaking about their declining symptoms, they speak to the sudden eradication of symptoms, the adjustments to their controllers, and the symptoms that were not improved or actually went the other way…or in some cases, returned. PwPs who are hoping to, some day, seek relief from their symptoms with DBS also attend these meetings, asking many questions of the participants.
