NEW TO PARKINSON'S? by Donna Mastropolo, PwP
Let’s face it, no one wants to hear that they have Parkinson’s Disease. It is quite overwhelming to say the least. Your first reaction – disbelief; next comes the question – why me? followed up with some anger, which is ok and perfectly normal. And then, what’s next? When diagnosed, everyone thinks of Michael J. Fox, but there are so many very different phases and symptoms. The hardest thing is finding someone who can relate. Here at Hackensack Meridian Health JFK Rehabilitation Institute we have developed a Newly Diagnosed Mentor/Mentee Program where those recently diagnosed patients (Mentee) will be matched with a person who has been battling the disease for a few years (Mentor). Once matched, the Mentor will reach out to their Mentee to schedule calls based on the Mentee’s needs and what they would like to discuss. This program does not provide any medical advice whatsoever. All medical questions should be discussed with your doctor. Just remember we are here to help you on your journey through Parkinson’s and YOU ARE NOT ALONE!.
